Postgraduate Studentships in Philosophy are available at the
University of Manchester.

The University of Manchester Department of Philosophy invites
applications from students wishing to pursue postgraduate research in
philosophy. There are several funding opportunities for our PhD
programme.

Philosophy at Manchester

Philosophy at Manchester, located within the School of Social Science,
has particular research strengths in Aesthetics, the Philosophy of Mind,
Philosophy of Language, Metaphysics, Environmental
Philosophy and the History of Philosophy. We are home to the
Manchester Mind Group and the Manchester Philosophy of Language Group, and are currently
hosting/involved with research projects on
Co-operation & Equality, Consciousness, Emotion & Social Cognition,
Biodiversity, Ontology and Semantics. We are also closely associated
with the Manchester Centre for Political Theory (MANCEPT).

Postgraduate Funding

AHRC Funding

The University of Manchester is a member of the North West Consortium
doctoral training partnership (NWC) which is offering up to 40 PhD
studentships this year. These studentships pay both fees and a
maintainence grant of £13,590 per annum. AHRC funding is available to
Home and EU students only. Successful applications may be upgraded to
a President’s Doctoral Scholar Award, which pays an extra £1,000
maintenance per year.

AHRC masters funding may also be available. Details will be announced soon.

School of Social Science Funding: PhD

We expect to offer two School of Social Science studentships for
2015-16 entry; these are funded to the same level as AHRC
studentships. One or more of these studentships may be upgraded to a
President’s Doctoral Scholar Award.

Overseas students may apply for School of Social Science studentships
but will, typically, have to make up the difference between Home and
Overseas fees.

Applicants

In the first instance, applicants should as soon as possible approach
either their potential supervisor or Catharine Abell (Postgraduate
Director), to discuss their proposed research project and gain advice
in putting together a successful application.

For additional information, please see our website.

If you have any queries concerning funding opportunities, or
philosophy at Manchester more generally, please don’t hesitate to get
in touch with Catharine Abell (Catharine.Abell@manchester.ac.uk).
